Es scheint, als würde man nach dem Tod wiedergeboren – ob man will oder nicht. Doch müssen Seelen, die in ihrem Leben eine äußerst schwerwiegende Sünden begannen haben, eine Art „Praktikum“ absolvieren und sich als würdig erweisen, sonst droht ihnen der Ausschluss aus dem regulären Kreislauf von Leben, Sterben und Wiedergeborenwerden.
Dies widerfährt auch dem Protagonisten, der im „Afterlife“ dazu auserkoren wurde, seine Fehler wiedergutzumachen und eine zweite Chance bekommt. Folglich wird er in den Körper des vierzehnjährigen Jungen Makoto Kobayashi transferiert, der geplant hat, sich umzubringen. Für ihn beginnt so ein neues Leben voller Höhen und Tiefen.
